05/04/05
Although there are no more general body meetings this year, AIAA still has one last event to commemorate the 2004-2005 school year. There isn’t going to be a picnic like there was at the beginning of the year.

Instead, our goodbye, end-of-the-year, senior sendoff event will be the annual Spring Banquet. It will be held on the last day of classes:

WHEN: Thursday, May 12th at 6:00 pm

WHERE: Holiday Inn (next to Ikea); 10000 Baltimore Ave; College Park, MD 20740

COST: $20 for AIAA members; $25 for non-members

ATTIRE: Business Casual

The guest speaker will be Dr. James E. Hubbard, Jr., the University of Maryland Langley Professor in Smart, Adaptive Aerospace Vehicle Technology and Concept Development at the National Institute of Aerospace.

There will be a sit-down dinner and student project presentations. We will also be presenting this year’s Professor Awards. Almost all of the faculty will be in attendance. In the past, this has been a memorable event and this year will be no different. For graduating seniors, this is a great opportunity to celebrate with all of your classmates as a whole one last time.

Tickets are on sale in the AIAA lounge (EGL 1163) until TOMORROW, Thursday, May 5th. If you are unable to buy your tickets in person by tomorrow, it is very important that you send me an e-mail to make alternate arrangements. Also, if anyone needs help with transportation, the AIAA and Sigma Gamma Tau officers are happy to provide a ride.

04/20/05
In case you missed last night’s general body meeting, here are the newly elected officers for the 2005-2006 school year. Congratulations to the new officers and thanks to everyone who came out and voted or ran for a position.

Chair: Sam Trepp
Vice Chair: Ethan Eagle
Vice Chair of Committees: Jason Leggett
Treasurer: Crystal Proffitt
Secretary: Victor Ling

As a side note, if you pre-ordered a T-shirt (and did not prepay), please pick up your shirt in the lounge by Friday, April 22nd. Beginning next week, we will begin selling shirts to anyone who wants one. If you have not made special arrangements with us, we cannot guarantee that your shirt size & design will still be available after this date. Thank you.

04/11/05
We have several important dates coming up:
Tuesday, April 12th – AIAA Meatball Sub Sales
Wednesday, April 13th – Sigma Gamma Tau Hot Dog Sales, Aerospace T-shirts arrive
Thursday, April 14th – Deadline for signing up for the Udvar-Hazy Center trip
Friday, April 15th – Deadline for 2005-2006 officer nominations
Saturday, April 16th – Field Trip to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
Tuesday, April 19th – Sixth General Body Meeting
Thursday, May 12th – 12th Annual Aerospace Awards Banquet

First off, the Aerospace T-shirts will be available on Wednesday, April 13th. Once again, the cost is $10 for local members and $13 for non-members. An updated member list has been posted on the wall in the lounge.

As announced in the last e-mail, we are going to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center this Saturday, April 16th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The cost is $10, which includes an IMAX ticket. If you would like to attend, please sign up in the lounge or send an e-mail to Ethan (eeagle@umd.edu) or Jason (hendricj@wam.umd.edu). The deadline for signing up is this Thursday at 1:00 pm. We only have 29 seats available. So, don’t delay.

The deadline for 2005-2006 officer nominations is Friday, April 15th. If you have any interest in running for office, put your name on the board in the lounge or simply send me an e-mail.

As a reminder, our Sixth General Body meeting is next TUESDAY (not Wednesday), April 19th at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202.

The photograph from the Fifth General Body meeting has been printed. If you attended the meeting, please stop by the lounge so that you can sign it before we send it to Dr. Richardson. The photo will be in the office, so ask an officer for assistance.

Finally, the 12th Annual Aerospace Awards Banquet will be on Thursday, May 12th at 6:00 pm at the Holiday Inn on Route 1 (10000 Baltimore Ave). Tickets are $20 for AIAA/SGT members, $25 for non-members, and $30 for faculty. They can be purchased from any AIAA/SGT officer at the lounge or during Hot Dog/Meatball Sub Sales. AIAA will be selling Meatball Subs this Tuesday (tomorrow) and Sigma Gamma Tau will be selling Hot Dogs on Wednesday.

04/04/05
The AIAA and Sigma Gamma Tau will be hosting a Movie Night this Wednesday, April 6th, at 7:00 pm in EGR 1202. We will be watching the 1987 film “Spaceballs.” Popcorn will be provided.

All are welcome to attend. We hope you will join us.

03/29/05
Our Sixth General Body Meeting has been moved from Wednesday April 20, 2005 to Tuesday, April 19, 2005. It will still be at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202. This change was necessary due to a scheduling conflict in which several aerospace engineering students (including our President Mark Brill and Vice President Sam Trepp) will be required to attend another event on April 20th.

Second of all, the trip to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (also known as the “new wing of the National Air & Space Museum”) will be on Saturday, April 16, 2005. Your Road Trip Committee chair, Jason Hendrickson, has planned the following tentative itinerary:
> 9:30am - 10:00 am - Board bus
> 10:00am - 11:00am - Travel time
> 11:00am - 11:30am - Arrival and IMAX seating
> 11:30am - 12:10pm - IMAX Movie ($5.50 per person for groups larger then 20)
> 12:10pm - 1:00pm - Lunch (the museum currently only has a Subway)
> 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Guided Tour
> 3:00pm - 4:00pm - Free Time
> 4:00pm - 4:15pm - Board Bus to Leave
> 4:15pm - 5:15pm - Travel back
> 5:15pm - 5:45pm - Unload/Clean-up

To help subsidize the cost of transportation, we have no choice but to ask our members for a small $10 fee. A sign-up sheet has been posted in the lounge if you are interested in attending.

Lastly, the time has come to select new officers for the 2005-2006 school year. Your current 2004-2005 officers have gone to great lengths to devise a way of carrying out the election that is fair to everyone.
1. The voting itself will take place at our Sixth General Body Meeting on Tuesday, April 19th. Between now and Friday, April 15th, open nominations will be held on the white board in the AIAA lounge. Any undergraduate member may run for office. The only stipulation is that the Vice President of Committees must not be graduating within 3 semesters. This proposition was voted on and passed in May 2004.
2. On Friday, April 15th, I will contact via e-mail those people who have been nominated on the white board. If any candidate chooses to decline the nomination, he or she may e-mail me back and request to have his or her name excluded from the official ballot. Candidates who accept their nominations should be prepared to give a short speech at the General Body Meeting.
3. Only local members may vote in this election. Please check the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet posted in the lounge to determine your current local membership status. Remember that local dues are effective for one year and must be renewed annually. If you have paid local dues within the past year, the date that you paid is shown. If there is an asterisk by the date, then it means that you paid my predecessor, Cat McGhan – in this case, note that your payment date is the day that you were actually signed up for national membership, which may differ from when you actually turned in your form.
a. (Please realize that with an organization this large and with new officers every year, there may be errors in our records. If you believe you have paid your local dues, but the spreadsheet does not reflect it, send me an e-mail and I will look into it.)
4. If your local membership has lapsed, and you would like to vote in the election for next year’s officers, you can stop by the lounge and give $5.00 to any AIAA officer. You have plenty of time before the election to do this.
5. At our Sixth General Body Meeting on April 19th, we will be distributing ballots to only those members whose local memberships are up to date. While the ballots themselves will be anonymous, you will have to check-in with me. I will use the most recent version of the spreadsheet to verify that your membership is current. Then I will cross your name off the list and hand you a ballot.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The Fifth General Body meeting will be next Wednesday, March 16th at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202. On behalf of the other student branch officers, I would like to officially announce the speaker: Dr. Donald W. Richardson.

Dr. Richardson is the corporate vice president at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the largest employee-owned research and engineering firm in the United States. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in 1999. He has had almost 50 years of experience with the FAA, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Coast Guard, and NASA

Dr. Richardson is also currently the President of the AIAA. We are privileged to have the head of our professional society pay our student branch a visit.

We hope you will join us next week. All interested faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend. You do not want to miss this special opportunity – it will probably not come again. As always, we will be providing pizza and refreshments at the end of the meeting.

We hope to see you there!

The deadline for ordering an aerospace T-shirt is Friday, February 25th. Remember: you do not have to pre-pay. If you have the slightest desire to own a T-shirt, please fill out an order form to guarantee yourself a shirt in the size you want (small to X-Large). They are $10 for AIAA members and $13 for non-members. Order forms can be found on the bulletin board in the lounge.

Welcome back! AIAA has many exciting things planned for the new semester. First of all, our Fourth General Body meeting is on Wednesday, February 16th at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202. Your student branch officers have arranged a very unique evening.

I am pleased to announce that Lockheed Martin Corporation will be visiting. A representative will be conducting a workshop titled "I'm Hired, Now What?” This workshop will cover everything a new hire will be faced with in the first few months on the job: from forms to insurance, from 401K to corporate culture, from finding a mentor to understanding the corporate grading system, and more. This is a great seminar being offered by a prominent aerospace corporation. Whether you are a graduating senior or a first year freshman, it will certainly be worth your while to attend. We will be providing pizza and refreshments at the conclusion of the meeting - free for AIAA members and $5 for non-members.

In other news, Aerospace T-Shirts are here! We have two different designs: one for aeronautics, one for astronautics. You can preview the designs in the AIAA lounge. Shirts are $10 for AIAA members and $13 for non-members. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, simply fill out a pre-order form and put it in the envelope. We are not requiring prepayment or deposits. However, if you would like to pay in advance, you can give your order form and money to Sam Trepp. We can take cash or checks (please make checks payable to “UMCP AIAA”)

11/14/04
The guest speaker for our Third General Body meeting will be Steve Moran. Mr. Moran is the Director of Civil Space Programs in the Corporate Business Development Office at the Raytheon Company. He is also the Chairman of the AIAA National Capital Section. He will be sharing his personal experience about how an MS in Engineering Mechanics landed him in the White House as well as the various choices we engineers will make throughout our careers. You won’t want to miss it.

11/10/04
The third (and last) general body meeting of the fall semester has been moved from Wednesday, November 17th to MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15th. The time and location remain unchanged – 6:00 pm, EGR1202. We are in the process of finalizing the guest speaker. As usual, there will be pizza – free for members, $5 for non-members.

11/04/04
The details of the FEMLAB seminar are in. It will be held next week on Thursday, November 11th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in room 3201 of the J.M. Patterson building. FEMLAB, as described on the company’s website, is “an interactive environment for modeling scientific and engineering applications.” Our aerospace engineering department has just purchased a large quantity of licenses and the program will be installed on many of the computers in the labs. You can expect FEMLAB to be incorporated into many aerospace classes in the future. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to attend. Juniors are especially encouraged to attend because FEMLAB will definitely be used next semester in ENAE324 Aerospace Structures. This seminar is open to *all* students. No prior experience with the program is needed. Pizza will be served, free for everyone including non-AIAA members.

Space for the FEMLAB seminar is limited, so it is highly recommended to register in order to guarantee yourself a spot. You can register at
http://www.comsol.com/seminars/usa/collegepark

10/17/04
The Second General Body meeting will be next Wednesday October 20, 2004 at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

We will be having an election for the new officer position mentioned in our previous e-mail. We will also be voting on a proposal to collect *local* membership dues every September. This would mean that, in the future, everyone’s local memberships would expire at the start of the academic year in September. Accordingly, everyone’s local memberships would be renewed at the same time. Please note that *national* memberships are handled by the national AIAA and will be unaffected. The two matters being voted on next week will affect our entire AIAA student branch, so please try to be there to voice your opinions and vote.

Committee members must be at this meeting because after the general body meeting, the officers will hold a meeting just for the committees. If you are on a committee, want to be on a committee, or are the committee chair you MUST be at this meeting.

10/05/04
On Thursday, October 7th from 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm, the Discovery Channel will be airing “Black Sky: Reaching For The X-Prize,” a feature on SpaceShipOne.

The AIAA and Sigma Gamma Tau will be watching this Discovery Channel special on the projection screens in EGR 1202. We hope you will join us.

09/24/04
The annual Fall Picnic has been rescheduled for Friday, October 1, 2004 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Please note that the location has changed: it will now be on the front lawn of the engineering building. All aerospace faculty, staff, and students are invited. We hope you will join us for food, games, catching up with old friends, and meeting new faces. Food is free for AIAA members and $5 for non-members. We will have membership forms available. If you are an AIAA member whose membership is about to lapse, please remember to renew it before or at the picnic.

Hot Dog Sales will be starting next week. They will be held every other Wednesday (starting September 29th) from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. There is a sign-up sheet posted in the lounge. We will need at least two people for each half-hour shift. This is one of our chief fundraisers; so if anyone is able to help out for a half hour (or more), please sign up. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Plus you will get a free lunch.

Lastly, the next general body meeting will be on Wednesday, October 20th. We hope to see everyone there!

09/16/04
The AIAA officers regret to announce that we are postponing the annual Fall Picnic, originally scheduled for Friday, September 17, due to the large amounts of rain, thunder, and wind from Hurricane Ivan that is expected to pass over our area tomorrow afternoon.

We reached this decision after careful consideration and collectively agreed that the picnic would be much more enjoyable for everyone at a later date.

The picnic will most likely be rescheduled for Friday, October 1 at the same time and location.

We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see everyone at Acredale Park on October 1. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

09/11/04
The general meeting dates for the fall semester are the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00 pm in EGR 1202. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 15th. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Professor Vince Brannigan from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering. He will be lecturing on ethics and aircraft design. You won’t want to miss it! Pizza will be served at the end of the meeting – free for AIAA members, $5 for non-members. This is a very important meeting, so please come if you can.

We are also hosting our annual Fall Picnic on Friday September 17th at Acredale Community Park, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (rain or shine; there is a pavilion). This event is open to all students and faculty. Please join us for food, games, catching up with old friends, and meeting new faces. Directions are available here - http://www.enae.umd.edu/AIAA/acredale_directions.html. Food is free for AIAA members and $5 all-you-can-eat for non-members. Membership forms will be available if you wish to sign up or renew your membership when you arrive.
